With reference to Your Excellency's despatch No.335
of this series of the 2nd of November last relative to
the duty levied in France on imported goods which have
been transhipped at Hongkong, I transmit to Your Ex-
cellency herewith a copy of a despatch from the Governor
of that Colony containing his observations upon the
correspondence which has passed with the French Govern-
mant.
I request Your Excellency to inform the French
Government of the substance of the Governor's despatch
and to point out to them that it would not always be
possible to comply with the requirement that tranship-
ment should invariably be made between vessels belonging
to the sale company for the reasons given in the second
paragraph of the despatch from the officer administering
the Government of Hongkong, a copy of which was enclosed
in my despatch to Your Excellency No.182 of the 23rd
of July last.
is Excellency
